Preparing for the Traffic Law Exam
Aside from being able to physically drive your vehicle, knowing the traffic laws and what road signs mean is the most important part of driving. That’s why California requires drivers to take and pass a written knowledge test of traffic laws and road signs. These laws were created to keep drivers, pedestrians, and even cyclists safe, so it is extremely important that you know and understand them.
What to Expect from the Test
The knowledge test is multiple choice and can be taken at any DMV field office. Please note that tests must begin before 4:30 PM (EST) to make sure that applicants have a sufficient amount of time to complete it. The test can be taken in English or Spanish. You may also chose to take either a written or audio version of the test. The California DMV strictly prohibits cheating on the test.
To pass the test, you must have sufficient knowledge of the traffic laws as well as an understanding of what different road signs mean. For example, did you know that you are supposed to turn your vehicle’s wheels a certain direction if you are parked on an incline or a decline? While you may think you know how to drive, there are many specific rules that you must follow to ensure everyone’s safety.
The California DMV offers a free Driver Handbook that covers all traffic laws and road signs that you need to know to pass the written test. To help you prepare, Infinity offers an Interactive Practice Test! Along with the Driver Handbook, the California DMV also has practice tests to help you study.
You can take a course at a state licensed professional driving school if you so desire. These schools will teach you all of the material needed to pass the written test and will allow you to complete instructional driving sessions. Applicants under the age of 18 are required to take such courses either at a professional driving school or at a California secondary school.
Please note that it is not necessary for adults ages 18 and older to attend such a course, though you may find it helpful. In fact, course participants will be eligible to apply for discounts on their auto insurance policies.
If you do not take a course, you will need to adequately study the Driver Handbook. You may find it helpful to actively read the Driver Handbook by highlighting, underlining, taking notes, and even making flashcards to study.
Passing the written test is necessary to obtain your license, so make sure that you are prepared! Infinity wishes you the best of luck!
